Anthony Young prepares the soil to bury donated olla pots to provide water to summer crops.

Thanks to Lori Haynes from Dripping Springs OLLAS, the Genesis Gardens introduces a new watering system to nourish the developing gardens. Mobile Loaves & Fishes community members and volunteers are currently digging to install the new olla system.

Ollas are terra cotta pots that are specifically designed to be buried up to their lip in your garden. Terra Cotta pottery is renown for its capacity to leech the water out rather than hold it in. Rather than water your plants directly, you fill up your olla and let the water leech out into your soil at such a depth that the sun has a much more difficult time of evaporating it. Over time, your plants will grow roots deep into the ground where they are getting their water from. During the worst droughts, olla gardens have the best capacity to weather the challenge.
