The carts will sell snacks, Blue Bell ice cream, a selection of pies from Texas Pie Kitchen, and coffee.

The MLF crew will be downtown on Sunday, March 10 at 3:00pm at the South Entrance to the Capitol (11th and Congress) to celebrate and launch this exciting new initiative.

After serving alongside Mobile Loaves & Fishes’ out on the streets of Austin, Tim and Agata Scott decided that there was one very simple, very specific way they could help our homeless brothers and sisters:  by making sure they had clean socks to wear.  The Scotts then developed a line of socks that are high quality, comfortable, and stylish and began selling them to locals, and then donating them for Mobile Loaves & Fishes to carry out on to the streets to distribute to our homeless friends.

“American manufacturing means jobs right here in the states and that matters to us,” Tim said.  “We have tried to address the needs of everyone that is involved in our socks from start to finish. Granted, it might be cheaper and easier to have them manufactured overseas, but we are about making the right decisions and not the easy ones.”

But Team Mitscoots didn’t stop there.  Working with Mobile Loaves & Fishes’ ROADS program, they employ homeless individuals to help with the packaging of the socks, giving them an opportunity to earn a dignified living in a safe, comfortable environment.

“We are about empowerment and offering a hand-up and not just a hand-out,” he said.  “When those that need it do work for us, they know that they have contributed to something bigger and that gives them a since of pride and accomplishment that goes well beyond just a charitable gesture. We don’t just want to help the homeless, we want to make a system where they have the ability to help themselves.”

What is even more exciting is that YOU (as an individual, or part of a business) can help us by becoming a fundraiser–and when you do, you’ll be eligible to win prizes for their efforts!

Individual fundraisers pick their own fundraising goal for their chosen nonprofit and receive donations on their fundraising page on AmplifyATX.org. (All fundraisers will be able to register by completing an online form on the Amplify Austin site).

“Just wanted to share a MLF Moment.  Stuart K., the Boy Scout in the picture raised 100+ coats in a his school and his Moms and Dads business. He wanted to be there when we handed them out so we and his family handed out the coats at Diamond Back 20 minutes before the front hit. Gods timing is spot on.”

For two decades House the Homeless and the citizens of Austin have gathered on Auditorium Shores (South 1st & Riverside, on the Lake) at the Homeless Memorial to acknowledge the men, women, and children who have lived and died on our streets.

On this Sunday, November 18, we will again gather at sunrise, 6:59am, to pray, cry, and sing goodbye to our beloved friends.

Don’t miss this citywide gathering when former City Council Member and environmental activist Brigid Shea will be our Keynote speaker. The Pastor Doug Keenan will pray with us, and the lovely Sara Hickman will wash us in song.

Breakfast tacos, coffee, and orange juice to be served after the service.

Location: The Homeless Memorial and Tree of Remembrance are located on Auditorium Shores on Town Lake at South 1st and Riverside Streets, just 75 yards east of the Stevie Ray Vaughn statue and west of the Fanny Davis Gazebo.

Many of our homeless brothers and sisters have found companionship and love with pets. They care for them as much as they care for themselves.  In some cases their pets are their only real ‘family’ and they have been with them for years.

According to the website Pets of the Homeless, between 5-10% of homeless folks have pets.  These critters subsist on what their owners can find for them, but they don’t always get the kind of nutritional food created for an animal’s optimal health and well-being.

Blair Smith, the intrepid owner of Austin Dirty Dog approached Mobile Loaves & Fishes and asked if she could help by accepting donations of pet food for us to hand out to our homeless brothers and sisters.  The children’s volunteer group Little Helping Hands will even portion into baggies for us to distribute on the streets of Austin!

       Kate Barta of St. John Neumann, her friend Carol and their 8 children will begin helping at the commissary once a week. This week they began by sorting donated clothing and shoes to put on the trucks. They also handmade prayer cards that will be laminated and handed out with survival kits to the area homeless. We’ve heard wonderous stories about the power of these prayer cards being the catalyst to get our most downtrodden through a day and ultimately off of the streets. Seeing those powerful words and a hand drawn picture gives them the strength to keep going. Mobile Loaves and Fishes prides ourselves on offering opportunities for the whole family and people of all ages to serve together.
