Mobile Loaves & Fishes was founded at St. John Neumann in Oct. 1998 by six parishioners! Since then we have witnessed the miraculous growth of this ministry to over 3000 volunteers associated with this commissary. This army of volunteers represents more than 40 different churches, businesses, groups, and unaffiliated individuals. What a wonderful example of people working together!
Monthly, there are make ready and truck teams that involve volunteers in preparing and delivering food for the 2-3 trucks that go out every day of the year. Egg Team members provide hard boiled eggs for good nutrition. Bread Ministry and Shoe Ministry volunteers pick up items from generous merchants. Our Sandwiches & More Teams make sandwiches and prepare lunches for veterans. The Prayer Card Ministry creates keepsakes for the people we serve. Teens earn service hours doing whatever needs to be done.
Expansion to new commissaries in Texas and in other states brings representatives here for training. We love sharing our expertise with others and delight in seeing MLF continue to grow.
After hurricane Katrina we were the hub of disaster relief operations that involved many trips to Louisiana and Mississippi, help with evacuees in Austin, and more than a thousand volunteers. Then hurricane Rita hit. By the time hurricane Ike hit we knew how to best use our resources to help.
