Hi there! I’m Peggy….aka Special P!

Thanks for your interest in my note cards. There are eight different styles. Each package is a different style or you can buy the mixed package, which combines a few different styles in one package. All are blank inside to write your own personal message.

For those of you that are interested in my story, I just celebrated my 50th birthday, which was quite a feat for me. I was born without any arms or legs. My mother took a prescription drug for morning sickness called thalidomide. They had no idea in the 60’s about possible birth defects. I am now known as a “thalidomide survivor” as I was not expected to live past the age of 40.

I became hopeless, and in 2001 I became homeless. I slept in my wheelchair in alleyways and camps. I wandered up and down Congress Avenue and Ben White Boulevard to find sympathetic businesses that would allow me to recharge my electric wheelchair. Imagine being stranded and unable to go anywhere because you have no legs! That was what it was like for me when I could not plug in my wheelchair to charge it.

The wonderful volunteers on the MLF trucks brought lifesaving food to my friends and me on the streets. The volunteers told me about the Mobile Loaves & Fishes Community First! Program, which helps the chronically homeless get affordable housing. I’m proud to say I have had my home for 2 ½ years. I just love it because I am safe from the ravages of the streets. I can sleep or eat when I want. I never have to worry about charging my wheelchair.

Now that I have a home, I can do things I really enjoy doing, like coloring “fuzzy posters.” I wanted to combine something I love doing with something to make some money to help with the little extras in life, like new curtains for my home, lights for my wheelchair, or a set of dentures. I get social security income, but frankly, it’s only just enough to pay for my rent, utilities and food. So I decided to make note cards out of my “fuzzy poster” art.
