Every day we witness the chaos our neighbors experience as they struggle to live on the streets of Austin. They are lonely, hungry and tired. They are hopeless, anxious and afraid. They are praying for an angel to help them find home. My friend, you are that angel. Your support of Mobile Loaves & Fishes is providing them the peace, community and home they are so desperately seeking.

We’ve led thousands of tours around Community First! Village over the years, and there are two comments we consistently hear: “I could live here” and “It is so peaceful here!” It is the peace that comes from living in a stable community surrounded by kind and caring neighbors.

Our friend and neighbor, Tuana, was born in Louisiana and moved to East Texas as a young girl. Her fractured family wasn’t able to provide a stable foundation for her, and Tuana soon found herself surrounded by people who didn’t provide the care that she needed. As a young adult, she became a certified nursing assistant, but her struggles with addiction disrupted her career. She often worked odd jobs, but nothing consistent enough to pay her bills. Sadly, Tuana soon found herself without a home. She spent too many nights sleeping in her car when there wasn’t room in a shelter. As you can imagine, finding a safe place to park her car for the night did not allow her to rest. She craved stability, security and peace—the peace that comes from feeling safe, settled and at home.

Housing alone will never solve homelessness, but community will.

Fortunately, Tuana made her way home to Community First! Village in 2023 through our partnership with Sunrise Homeless Navigation Center.

It is because of compassionate and generous people like you that Community First! Village is a place where our neighbors like Tuana can find security, stability, peace and home. You have helped nearly 400 men and women who struggled to survive on the streets find an affordable, permanent home in this caring community.

Tuana has a busy life here in the Village. She starts her day early by walking her dog and then moves on to her work with the janitorial team. She spends time in the aquaponics greenhouse caring for the plants and fish, and some days she drives the Gus Bus to help her neighbors move around the Village. Tuana also has a group of neighbors that she helps with daily living chores, but it is her big dinner parties that her neighbors appreciate most!

Because of you, Tuana has found peace and made her home here in Community First! Village.

“The Village has changed me for the better and it feels good in my heart!”
