Our friend and neighbor, Shorty, wears many different hats in his active life. Shorty is a veteran, a gardener, a groundskeeper and a volunteer leader. He is even sometimes referred to as the Village “Sheriff,” but in his decade of living at Community First! Village, he is best known for being a good neighbor. After spending more than 30 years living on the streets, Shorty made his way home to Community First! Village in 2016.

Because of compassionate people like you, the Village has become Shorty’s permanent home and the neighbors are his beloved community.

Like you, Shorty demonstrates nearly every day what it means to “love your neighbor.” He began volunteering with the Genesis Gardens crew long before he even lived at Community First! Village. Now retired, he still volunteers with the groundskeeping team. Most days you can find him in the Living Room drinking coffee and playing games with his neighbors. Over the years, we have witnessed him serve his neighbors with great care and kindness. Though he doesn’t think of himself as a hero, he certainly is one in our eyes. Several years ago, when a fellow neighbor’s home caught fire, Shorty along with another neighbor ran into that home and pulled their neighbor out of harm’s way. When asked why he would go into a burning building, he replied, “I just had to do what I could to help!”

People like you and Shorty are some of the most compassionate and caring people!

We need your help now to ensure that more men and women like Shorty who are experiencing homelessness make their way home to Community First! Village.

Thank you for being such a good neighbor. We know we can count on you to consistently stand alongside our neighbors with the support they need to transform their lives. We are so grateful for you!
